I decided to be a volunteer exercise coach at a school where I’ll also coach the high school boys basketball team when that season comes around.
I’m immediately setting up 4 ATG sleds with carpeting underneath.
These slide well on an upstairs track above the basketball court.
I like a total of 100 yards forward and 100 yards backward.
For schools, I also think there’s huge potential with PARTNER sleds.
My kids saw me playing around with this idea and they came right over and started backward sled dragging with no coaching!
But if you don’t have space, resisted treadmills are a great option.
I’ve already got 4 of those set up here at the school, giving me a total of 8 sleds or resisted treadmills to work with!
I like 30 seconds forward, 30 seconds backward, 1-2 minute rest, then repeat! This simple routine creates an unreal pump!
Why do I think this is a skill for life?
Well, you can start incredibly gently. The weight isn’t bearing down on you, so you can gradually work vigorously and increase ABILITY - but with less trauma in the process!
That’s how backward sledding helped get me off painkillers for my knees more than 10 years ago.
And that’s why it’s the foundation of my mom’s plan to run at 100!
(She turns 71 this week and she’s COOKIN’!)
For demonstration purposes, I loaded a sled with 1,000 pounds and had her try to move it.
It didn’t budge… but she was just fine!
Given our modern problems with obesity and knee surgeries, I think teaching sled as an exercise skill for life is a step in the right direction.
Can’t wait to keep sharing my journey at this school with you!

Ben
