1. Barefoot is best…
2. Modern surfaces, such as concrete, call for shoes.
But shoemakers created style changes which aren’t ideal for function.
One change is narrow toes. Millions of people now have pain from this deviation of the natural foot.
My kids’ toes don’t look like those in the jammed-in picture above, and I’m glad I won’t have to change their natural feet.
There are now many FOOT-shaped shoes on the market, and we even make our own ATG shoes, in adult and kid sizes!
Our shoes are stocked and shipping. Soon we’ll even release hand-shaped gloves! (OK, that’s a joke, but it may help illustrate the problem.)
3. CUSHION IS RELATIVE TO YOUR LIFE
I play basketball on HARDWOOD.
That calls for more cushion than my day-to-day life.
So while I think everyone should have a pair of foot-shaped shoes, I also think the ideal amount of cushion will vary from person to person, and from activity to activity.
There are also now some foot-shaped shoes with more cushion.
A couple years ago, we released the first foot-shaped basketball shoes on the market, and I’ve been grateful to play in them ever since!
CONCLUSION
I hope this helps simplify the subject of footwear, but I think it’s worth closing with a reminder that in the lifetime of the average person, FEET and LOWER LEGS have not had as much strength and flexibility development as the body above.
I believe this, too, can be accomplished simply and effectively.
Calf raises, tibialis raises (the opposite of calf raises), and sledding have worked well for me and handled many foot, ankle, Achilles and shin problems for those doing ATG programs.
Each method is simple and can be done either without equipment or with low-priced equipment compared to typical gym machines.
So my final and overarching (no pun intended) advice is: Build from the ground up.

Ben
