Here’s a bonus series to complement my ATG Phys Ed series.
This is the Dad Series I would have taught myself when first becoming a parent.
Step 1
Early on, support the magic.
The magic is mom.
So be supportive and find ways to be useful.
The most notable one for me was walking the kids in carriers. It gave mom a break, allowed me to bond with the kids, and helped them take naps.
For the first 6 months they face inward. Then they can start to face outward.
(MASTER getting the thing on BEFORE you need to use it. They can be surprisingly not user-friendly!)
Step 2
Get… ready… to… PLAY!
You don’t need an iPad.
You’re gonna set your phone down.
You’re gonna have to remember that you have an imagination, and that it’s okay to be silly.
You’re gonna be tired sometimes but you’re never gonna tell them you’re too tired to play.
And in return? They’ll give you more love and purpose than you ever imagined.
Step 3A goes along with this: gymnastics mats in the living room.
Move the couches to the perimeter.
Get rid of the coffee table.
Put down mats.
Your kids will be more mobile and active. They’ll be able to safely play and develop.
You can put the mats down from day 1.
But Step 3B is more heading into age 2 or 3: Get a rectangular mat that folds out into a ramp. This allows climbing, jumping, landing, and rolling.
And Step 3C. Get something to hang from.
I think it can be that simple to give your kids healthy physical development from home, with this big bonus: LESS NEED FOR SCREENS.
And along with this is…
Step 4: Structure your day the best you can to prioritize getting your kids OUTSIDE.
Conclusion:
If you’re playing with your little ones, with your living room set up for them, AND you’re getting them outside, I think you’re doing a great job.
I know your kids are going to love it - and you.
I hope this article helps simplify and reduce stress for a new dad out there.
Yours in Solutions,
Ben
