Athletic Longevity Series 2 - Balanced Ability

We have a route for athletic LONGEVITY.

Martin St. Louis went from undrafted to NHL champion and MVP.

At 37, he was the oldest player to lead the league in scoring. Seeing his regimen 10 years ago made me believe my athletic potential was greater than I previously thought.

He was right, and I’ll show you exactly how…

Marty would push the sled 50 yards forward, then drag it 50 yards backward, then drag it 50 yards sideways - with 400 pounds!

image

He would then take a 90-second break, and do it again!

In a gym of 20 pro hockey players, he was the king of forward, backward, and sideways.

But he was also the king of LOW and SLOW, able to control 400 pounds all the way down, despite weighing just 180!

image

And he was the king of strings - HAMSTRINGS, that is.

His ability to control his body with the back of his legs is legendary!

image

-forward, backward, and sideways!

-high and low!

-fast and slow!

-front and back of the body!

Seeing a theme yet?

He did many other things but the overall theme was:

BALANCE of ABILITY.

I was no Martin St. Louis.

I flopped and flailed trying to do the bodyweight hamstring curl.

To my knowledge, I was the world’s first chump to elevate the front of a bodyweight ham curl bench to reduce the difficulty.

Now I’ve helped millions realize that ABILITY is a GRADIENT SCALE - NOT AN ABSOLUTE!

Now 10 years later, I can match Marty’s exact feat of hamstring strength, and I have the athleticism of my dreams.

But more importantly…

We have a route for athletic LONGEVITY.

Example: My mom is 70 and she plans to run at 100!

Her strategy?

Keep sledding forward and backward, keep ATG Split Squatting, and keep strengthening the posterior! (BALANCED ABILITY: forward and backward, fast and slow, high and low, front and back!)

image

This is the same “formula” that Martin St. Louis used, but at HER levels, and for just a short time each day, since bodies take longer to recover as they get older.

With 2 kids and a business, my wife and I are so grateful that we can do just 3 balanced workouts per week and have the athleticism of our dreams.

image

So I think BALANCED ABILITY is the most fundamental natural law of exercise for athletic longevity, but I also think how you apply that is more of an ART.

Thanks to Martin St. Louis for helping open my eyes to this; to his trainer Ben Prentiss; and to Prentiss’ teacher, Charles Poliquin.

Yours in Solutions,

Ben
