The year 1880 was the earliest published knee strengthening I’ve seen. It appeared in the book “Health by Exercise,” which emerged from what was becoming GYMNASTICS.
A full split squat was an abandoned method of catching the bar in OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING.
Sledding as exercise was thought up by POWERLIFTING coach Louis Simmons.
So the things that worked for us and then our in-person clients came from a variety of backgrounds, with the greatest common denominator being BALANCED EXERCISE, such as:
-forward AND backward (and even sideways!)
-fast AND slow
-high AND low
-strength AND flexibility
And the #2 common denominator was having a GRADIENT scale of levels for each exercise:
My job basically became helping people exercise in a balanced manner at their pain-free level, toward the goal of improving athletic longevity.
ATG is the name of my exercise system because that’s what I named my gym many years before I went on social media.
“ATG” was already an acronym for “ass to grass,” which indicates squatting with a full range of motion.
Both knee over toes and ass to grass were mistakenly mandated against rather than understood. Those subjects directly took me from almost a decade of fragile knees, surgery, painkillers, and depression, to now over a decade without a knee setback, and relatively world-class knee protection.
So my gym was ATG, and I then made my social media name Kneesovertoesguy, but I hope this article makes it clear that my philosophy is simply:
BALANCED EXERCISE AT YOUR PAIN-FREE LEVEL
