Apparently fewer youth than ever can do a pull-up. I’m not pretending to have all the answers but I am trying to DO something about that.
Part 1 of this series covered a variety of common sense solutions, since we have modern problems like over 50% of the child diet now being ULTRA-PROCESSED.
Part 1 also touched on the value of the PLAYGROUND for toddlers.
But by age 6, the playground usually drops out.
That is where my PE system begins, CONTINUING the fundamentals being developed on the playground, and turning them into gradient-scale exercises for life.
I will cycle through a wide variety of sports, with only ONE ATG progression per day.
For the pull-up, I use the following 4-step progression:
1. Hang
2. Hold
3. Lower
4. Full Reps
I will validate whatever level the kids work at.
When the pull-up is easy, I’ll balance this with bodyweight rows.
I’ll be sure all my students graduate with an understanding that a balance of vertical and horizontal pulling is a health basic for life.
Yours in Solutions,
Ben
